Homework

I downloaded the template to create the book and I've started inserting images. It takes 7 - 11 days for the book to print and get delivered, so I will be ordering it by the end of the week. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do with the cover/ the sizes of the images.

Homework

My final decision for the book theme content is light and shadows. These photos will include shadows I find in nature, still life, street photography and portraits.

For the book, I want to keep it really simple. I plan on using Blurb to make a 6 x 9 in trade book. I plan on putting some text in the beginning. The book will have a softcover.

Final Project - Ideas

One idea for the final project is to photograph light and shadow. I've always been drawn to and interested in shadows in photography, whether it's shadows on a model's face or the shadow itself as a subject. I'm also interested in patterns and lines. I plan on studying the intersection of light and shadow both in portraits and in nature. As for the book, I want to keep it simple, clean and light where the focus is on the photographs... or to create a book that opens up like an accordion.

The second option is to photograph things that are blue. I've always been drawn to the sky and the ocean when taking photos. I would then make the book blue.

Assignment - Lighting

Part 1 - Quality of Light

Hard/ Direct Light
1/30 at F4 ISO 800

Soft/ Diffused light
1/10 at F4 ISO 800

Part 2 - Direction of Light

Light from the front
1/40 F4 ISO 800

Light from the side
1/20 F4 ISO 800
Light from above
1/40 F4 ISO 800

Light from below
1/30 F4 ISO 800

Light from behind
1/14 F4 ISO 800

Part 3
I used a white cloth to diffuse the light for quality of light. The hard/direct photo was more intense and more clear. For direction of light, each of the angle/direction evoked a different feeling. For light from the front, the light is very bright and clear. It almost evokes a feeling of fear, like a mug shot. Light from the side creates a shadow which is quite mysterious since you can only see half of her face. Light from the above results in deep shadows on her face. This can also evoke a feeling of dark and mysterious. The same happens for light from below, which creates deep shadows on the subjects face. This evokes a scary feeling too, like a horror film. Light from the behind creates a sense of depth, creating a clear separation between the subject and background. If the photograph would've been a bit underexposed, it could've resulted a nice silhouette.

Choice of Photographer - Diane Arbus

For the oral presentation, I would like to present Diane Arbus. I picked her because I've always liked her work and I would like to study it more. I've looked at her work before but I'm interested in learning more about her and the story behind her work. I think the way she captures marginalized people is really interesting. I also want to learn more about her techniques and what camera and process she used in her work.
